Category: Adult Fiction, 382 pages
Genre: Historical fiction
Publisher: iUniverse
Release date: January 17, 2018
Tour dates: May 21 to June 8, 2018
Content Rating: R

Book Description:

It is the mid-1960s in Kingston, Jamaica, and the country is steeped in social, political, and economic inequities. Howard Baxter, the heir to a real estate empire, has no interest in seeking or managing wealth. Painting and deflowering Jamaican maidens are his passions. As he combs the streets looking for greater meaning in his pathetic life, it soon becomes apparent that Howard's journey will not be easy.

Bernaldo Lloyd, a member of the Baxter clan, is a medical student who is sensitive to the hopelessness of the Jamaican masses. Inspired by his close friend and Howard's cousin, Ras Robin Pone, and their ties with the Rastafari movement that calls for social and economic equity, Bernaldo is determined to overthrow the corrupt government. As Howard, Bernaldo and Robin become influenced by America's Black Power and Civil Rights movements demanding equal rights for African Americans, the women in their lives both love and criticize them. But when revolution breaks out, Howard finally discovers a purpose for his twisted life that leads him in a direction he never anticipated.

In this tale of love, passion, and self-discovery, two Jamaican men become caught up in a 1960s revolution that reveals injustices, oppression, and a purpose for one of them.

Praise for A Reason for Living:

“Riveting, touching on micro and macro relationships of love, sex and politics, and the search of Jamaicans for the essence of their existence, with many compelling scenes and very touching, sensitive dialogues.”
- Dr. Basil Wilson, New York Carib News

"A Reason for Living is a highly complex work that pits sense against sensibility. Emotions surge, transforming men in unfathomable ways. And as love and revolution march in lock-step, Jingles might well have earned a place among the region’s more interesting writers."
- Glenville Ashby, Kaieteur News

“The author, filmmaker, entrepreneur did not wile away five decades as a bystander but may have calculatedly used the hiatus to toil in order to reveal a compelling novel about the creative and volatile ‘60s in Jamaica.”
- Vinette K. Pryce, Caribbean Life

A quick interview :

What made you write a book about a woman bounty hunter?
Well, there was no other profession fit for Poppy Montgomery. She was the most unique character I’ve ever written. Her exceptional skills with a gun, foul mouth, and willingness to go up against anyone, a bounty hunter seemed to fit.

Where do you get inspiration for your stories?
Everywhere. I people watch, listen to music, and read. Inspiration is all around us; you just have to pay attention.

What advice would you give budding writers?
Do not give up. It’s a tough world out there, and even more so when you’re a writer. You have to take criticism, sometimes harsh criticism…but always remember it is never personal. Do your research. Don’t assume you know it all when it comes to publishing, or writing. Be prepared to market your book. Always stay humble.

Your book is set in Kansas and Missouri. Have you ever been there?
No, I have not. I would love to though.

Favorite travel spot?
Jamaica hands down for tropical. It is absolutely beautiful there.
Europe for the history…and I have not been there yet.

Favorite dessert?
Anything chocolate!

If you were stuck on a deserted island, which 3 books would you want with you?
The Bible
Little Women

Gone with the Wind

Blog Tour / Book Musings - Faultlines by Doug Johnstone

A little lie … a seismic secret … and the cracks are beginning to show… In a reimagined contemporary Edinburgh, where a tectonic fault has opened up to produce a new volcano in the Firth of Forth, and where tremors are an everyday occurrence, volcanologist Surtsey makes a shocking discovery. On a clandestine trip to new volcanic island The Inch, to meet Tom, her lover and her boss, she finds his lifeless body, and makes the fatal decision to keep their affair, and her discovery, a secret. Desperate to know how he died, but also terrified she’ll be exposed, Surtsey’s life quickly spirals into a nightmare when someone makes contact – someone who claims to know what she’s done…

My Musings :

The first thought I had when I read the blurb was 'Ooo a murder mystery'. And the very next thought was how apt the cover and the title are. The cover, though simple, draws the eye to the woman and the implied secrets behind her serious look.  The title perfectly sums up the life of Sur after finding her boss dead on the Inch. Small cracks keep appearing in her life and they slowly grow into the biggest chasm which leads to the ultimate end. So no wonder I was really tempted to read the book.

This is the first book of the author's I have read. So I was a tiny bit anxious, wondering about his writing style.  I was surprised to find a map at the start. It was easy to imagine the layout of the Inch with its help. The beginning of the book itself sealed my impression with the aforementioned map and the corresponding mysterious death of Tom - boss and lover to Sur, the protagonist of the book.

I was impressed with the author's crisp writing and the way he described the scenes so as to form images easily in the reader's mind. I especially enjoyed reading about the geology based narration. Though I am not familiar with it, it was easy enough to become engrossed in it. I loved the book being based in an alternative Edinburgh, another surprise which made a favourable impression on me.

I loved every moment the author spent talking about the Inch and the way "she" was increasingly becoming agitated. That's how it felt to me as the story progressed. I felt that it was corresponding to the tense situations in Sur's life. The way she found her dead lover, finding his phone and then hiding the fact from everyone - all contributed to the tense atmosphere and added to the volatility of the story. At times I thought that the Inch was the protagonist instead of Sur. That's how interconnected both were.

Though the story started with the literal bang of a death, I felt it slowed down for a while with the story the author weaved around Sur, Iona and their mother. Yes, it was necessary to delve into the personal details but it overwhelmed the suspense aspect of the book. The messages from the suspected culprit to Sur were were sparse at the start and they sped up towards the end. That felt hurried to me.

But towards the last quarter, the story really went into high gear and the way Sur got into trouble with the police had me anticipating the coming up scenes. At that point, I was suspicious of a particular person and that's who ended up being the killer. It was a bit easy to figure out who but I never understood the reason behind the killer's actions. There didn't seem any solid reason for it. It left me baffled even after the book ended.

So did I enjoy the book? Definitely yes! The slow to gear up story had its moments of gripping scenes which kept me immersed in Sur and the Inch simultaneously culminating into a heart jolting finale.

I received a copy voluntarily for the blog tour through Random Things Tours.

My one line review : A slow to gear up mystery with geology descriptions in tandem with the intense and explosive events.

My rating : 4/5

My reread factor : 3/5

Book Blitz - Shopping for a Billionaire's Baby by Julia Kent

Shopping for a Billionaire’s Baby
Julia Kent
(Shopping for a Billionaire #13))
Publication date: April 24th 2018
Genres: Adult, Comedy, Romance
You know what’s even better than marrying a billionaire? Having his baby.
We’re ready. We’ve studied and planned, read all the birth and labor books, researched parenting classes, consulted our schedules, and it’s time.
And by we I mean me.
Declan’s just ready for the “have lots of sex” part. More than ready.
But there’s just one problem: my husband and his brother have this little obsession with competition.
And by little, I mean stupid.
That’s right.
We’re not just about to try to bring a new human being into the world.
We have to do it better, Faster, Stronger.
Harder.
McCormick men don’t just have babies.
They engage in competitive billionaire Babythons.
I thought the hardest part about getting pregnant would be dealing with my grandchild-crazed mother, who will go nuts shopping for a billionaire’s baby.
Wrong.
Between conception issues, my mother’s desire to talk to the baby through a hoo-haw cam, a childbirth class led by a drill sergeant and a father-in-law determined to sign the kid up for prep school before Declan even pulls out, my pregnancy has turned out to be one ordeal after the other.
But it’s nothing — nothing — compared to the actual birth.
Shopping for a Billionaire’s Baby is the newest book in Julia Kent’s New York Times bestselling romantic comedy series.
EXCERPT:

“Just because other people can’t get their act together as parents doesn’t mean we can’t,” I explain. “There is no process that can’t be project managed into a well-oiled machine, babies included.”
Andrew snorts. “You really believe that.”
“A baby is like a disruptive new technology. But our first deliverable is still eight months to a year away. That leaves us plenty of time to update our practices and diversify into new areas. Find the best people, incentivize them, and keep them in their swim lanes.”
I’m getting major raised eyebrows here.
“Optimization protocols, testing, fine tuning, and putting together the right team is all it takes. Drill down to the essentials, find people who are the absolute best at what we need, and that’s it–we build a life based on optimal outcomes.”
“You sound like you’re making a robotic dog, Dec. Not a human.”
“This baby will have a hands-on father. Plenty of love. And with a mother like Shannon, how could we go wrong?” Mother. Calling Shannon a mother does something to my gut. A tug, hard and emotional, destabilizes me for a second.

Author Bio:
New York Times and USA Today Bestselling Author Julia Kent writes romantic comedy with an edge. From billionaires to BBWs to new adult rock stars, Julia finds a sensual, goofy joy in every contemporary romance she writes. Unlike Shannon from Shopping for a Billionaire, she did not meet her husband after dropping her phone in a men's room toilet (and he isn't a billionaire). She lives in New England with her husband and three sons in a household where the toilet seat is never, ever, down.

  Exclusive Excerpt:

I swipe the green circle to the right and bring the phone up to my ear. "God, I've never been so happy to hear that song." He sighs in disgust. "Don't tell me you still have The Golden Girls song set as my ringtone." I smile just at the sound of his voice. "Yep. And I'm never gonna change it." He laughs. "You're a weird one." I hold my phone with my cheek and shoulder as I pull my hair up into a ponytail. "And you're stuck with me." "I wouldn't have it any other way." It could just be me or my shitty cell connection, but Logan's voice sounds much deeper than usual. I reach under my bed and retrieve my basket of nail polishes. "What color?" He ponders my question for a minute before he answers. "Red. Wait. Toes, or fingers?" I laugh. He always knows just what to say to split my sides. "Toes." "Toes? What's the special occasion?" The shock in his voice amuses me. "Why does it have to be a special occasion?" "Because I know you, Han. The last time you painted your toes was homecoming. And then the time before that it was your birthday." I see his point. "Fine, you got me. I'm leaving for Daytona Beach in a couple of hours. The girls and I are having a beach day to kick off Spring Break." He lets out a long oh before he speaks. "In that case, better make it blue." He peaks my interest, causing me to furrow my brow. "How come?" "Blue is less noticeable. And since I'm not there to kick whichever sorry ass tries to hit on you, blue it is." I contemplate whether or not to fight him on his protective stance. Oh, what the hell. It'll be fun. "So, purple it is." "Don't you fucking dare paint them purple," he growls, catching me off guard. The assertiveness in his tone causes my legs to tingle. I ignore it. "Too late. The first coat is on already." His voice remains stern as he reprimands me. "Don't make me fly my ass down there and rip every speck of purple off your nails." "You wouldn't," I tease, trying my best not to laugh at his overreaction. He clears his throat. "Don't test me."

EXCERPT:
“I …” Tasia paused, choosing her words with care this time. “My work with your Pack …” “Fuck the Pack.” His voice was very even. “This has nothing to do with the Pack. I’m talking
about us — you and me.”
“No.” She shook her head, wishing the noise in her head would abate and allow her to think
more clearly. “There’s no us.”
An eyebrow arched up in the near darkness. “So, that kiss in the cave …”
Tasia interrupted him. “I didn’t kiss you.”
He shot her a look.
“You kissed me” she insisted, responding to that look. “Both times.”
“No” he said unequivocally. “We’ve both been willing partners in this dance. I lead, but you’ve
been with me every step of the way.”
They stared at each other, the air between them charged with an awareness that they stood on
the edge of a precipice. She couldn’t discern his expression but she wondered what he read in hers, with his night eyes.
“Any time you’d like a demonstration, let me know” he remarked sardonically.
Tasia flushed. They’d been leading up to this moment, she realized. This was the dance he talked about. She should have put a stop to it before. Now, she’d have to defuse it carefully or the resulting conflagration would destroy her.
“I’ve been around the block a few times, witchling. You and I — we make our own fire, no tinder required. That’s not it. Something else has you stepping back. What is it?”
Tasia thought furiously, through the fog in her head. “You don’t get involved with Pack” she reminded him.
“I’m willing to make an exception for you” he said clearly.
Tasia blinked, once. He wasn’t going to make this easy for her.
“I did tell you once that I’d ignore my principles for the right person.” It was his turn to remind
her.
Tasia, who remembered the occasion well, said nothing.
“Am I to continue with the Pack?” she asked.
“Yes.”
She hesitated. “What happens if things … uh … don’t work out between us?”
He laughed, a sound singularly devoid of amusement.
“You’ve walked away from the Pack before. I didn’t let that stop me from going after you,
when I thought you were in danger. What does that tell you, witchling?”
Tasia couldn’t refute him. There was nothing to say. He would not let his personal feelings get
in the way of his responsibilities to his Pack or to her, no matter how bad things got between them. Then, something seemed to strike him. “Is it because I’m a Shifter?”
Tasia wondered wildly if he would accept that. Perhaps his pride would not let him pursue her if he believed that she wanted no part of a relationship with a Shifter. It would make her sound like a bigot. But she’d take that.
“Will you let this be if … if I have reservations about Shifters?” she asked hopefully.
“Hell no.” His response was immediate and forceful. “I’ll do my damnedest to change your mind.”
He frowned, something about her answer registering finally. “Is that what this is about — being with a Shifter?”
Again, he was forthright with his query, and Tasia realized she could not bring herself to lie to him. Like him, she too was willing to make an exception. For him.
“No” she admitted softly.
There was a short silence while Tasia tried to get her jumbled thoughts into order. The wild cacophony in her head was now so loud that it drowned out everything but his voice, even the gentle lap of water against the wall and the whoosh of the wind behind her.
“Let me simplify this for you” he said, the gold eyes holding her gaze. “Tell me what you want, and we go from there.”
“What I want?” Tasia repeated mechanically.
I can’t have what I want.
“Don’t tell me you don’t know what you want.” His eyes narrowed in the darkness.
Tasia shook her head, her eyes darting away as if to seek an escape. She’d have to walk away, she thought despairingly. She saw no other way out.
His initial fury having abated, Raoul was starting to use his connection to her, much as he had before, when he’d been so attuned to her unspoken words. He had realized it almost immediately, taking it in stride. He wondered if she had picked up on it yet.
“You told me once that you don’t run away” he reminded her, picking up hints of her roiling emotions.
Tasia said nothing.
“If you run from me because you don’t want to deal with whatever is between us, witchling, I will come after you.” His voice hardened as a spike of anger flared in him. “I won’t stand by again while you run recklessly into the fire.”
Tasia looked away from him. There seemed no way out of this impasse. He would not back away, not without an explanation from her. She could not give him one, not without endangering all sorts of secrets, and she was very much afraid that, unless she convinced him to walk away first, she’d eventually succumb to him.
Talk about jumping from the frying pan into the fire!
Raoul stared at her, puzzled by her inexplicable desire to deny that which sizzled like a living entity between them. He tried to piece together what he could sense from her.
Suddenly, it hit him. “You’re afraid!” he muttered incredulously.
This was the primary emotion he sensed from her, overriding everything else. He had sensed many emotions from her before but terror, the kind he sensed now, had thus far been reserved exclusively for the Clan.
She said nothing, neither confirming nor refuting his statement. Jolted, he took a step back. “Of what?”
Tasia stared at him mutely, her hesitation palpable.
“Of me?” he asked, his voice hoarse.

My Musings :

Ever since I first read Mellie's story, I have been interested and invested in all 3 friends' stories. So as soon as this one came onto my radar, I jumped at the chance to read it. I absolutely loved loved loved it!

If I thought Mellie with her clumsiness and Peyton with her stubbornness were wonderful, then I need to be checked out. I really thought Chloe was the sane one to balance out the trio. I don't know where I got that idea but I was seriously wrong!! So wrong! This girl rocked me with her humour and her antics involving Dom. Chloe is my new favourite among the three friends hands down!

From the beginning, I was very much immersed in Chloe's life and it started right with the first few sentences, which I call the chapter-isms, making me laugh and launch right into the big mess Chloe had made of her life. I had a lot of reactions while reading this book. The most prominent one was the amusement at the toddler level bickering between Chloe and Dom. Oh my!! Their fights really got me reminiscing about the cute skirmishes which take place in kindergarten between girls and boys. I literally imagined Chloe with 2 pigtails and Dom in shorts and him trying to get her attention and her protesting with feet stomping. I had so much fun with their love squabbles.

I say love squabbles because it was evident even in the starting pages that they were crazy about each other. They just had blinders on and they had to get to know each others' hearts in a different way and that's what made the bulk of the tale. I actually hated Peyton a bit because of what she didn't do! If you read the book, you will know what I mean.

I was surprised at Dom's level of playfulness but I think I shouldn't have been. After all he is Peyton's brother and that itself says it all. I really loved Chloe. I got where she was coming from, in her decisions. The way they surprised each other had me feeling warm and fuzzy inside. I was really surprised with the romance. I expected hot and heavy but inspite of high sexual tension and one love scene, it was sweet and light. That was my favourite part of the book!

And.. well I can go on. But I would rather not spoil your read. Just know that they go through some confusion before they come to their happily ever after! And I can say without any hesitation that the sweet romance, the love squabbles between the pair and the high sexual tension will have you reading their story at a fast pace without any break till you reach the end.

I received a free copy for reviewing purposes voluntarily which doesn't impact my review.

My one line review : A seriously sweet pining-for-each-other romance.

My rating : 5/5

My reread factor : 4/5

Book Description:

At thirty-six, Susan Sinclair has it all. She's just been promoted to Senior Vice President of Mobile Banking at her firm, a prestigious position bringing fresh creative challenges and a hefty salary increase. Like the shiny new BMW in the driveway of the Silicon Valley home she shares with her husband, Matt, and their two beautiful boys, Susan exudes confidence and style.

Yet despite her success in juggling the roles of wife, mother, and businesswoman, Susan struggles with a secret dissatisfaction. Matt's work in cutting-edge computer research pays less than her job, and with each advance in her career, he has grown more distant. But Matt refuses to admit there is a problem, and Susan forces herself to play along, determined to give her boys the close-knit family life she never had.

Then she meets her new boss, Reese Kirkpatrick. Working and traveling together, she and Reese become a crackerjack team, but little by little, pleasure mixes with business. For the first time in a long time—maybe ever—Susan feels seen and appreciated for who she is. Certain she would never allow their friendship to cross the line, Susan lets herself stray dangerously close to the edge.

A moment of weakness changes everything. Now, unable to stomach the façade her marriage has become yet unwilling to decimate her family by moving forward with Reese, Susan faces a choice that could cost her everything—including her children . . . but possibly bring her more than she can dream.

Praise for Degrees of Love:

"Slabach crafts a relatable, heartbreakingly real story that will no doubt resonate with those at a similar station in life: women who love their families yet yearn for just a little more—to feel wanted rather than needed, to feel passion rather than complacency. In engaging prose and through skillful storytelling, Slabach captivates with an all-too-familiar story that raises questions with no easy answers."
- Kirkus Reviews (Starred Review)

"This does not read like a debut author’s book. Slabach shows herself to be adept at portraying the complex emotions of the human condition. Her characters live and breathe on the page in a way that every author strives for, but few actually manage. Susan’s struggles ring true, and the way she handles everything makes her a very likable and relatable character."
- Sarah Perry, San Francisco Book Review, 5 Stars

"Profound, heart wrenching and very emotional, it is hard to believe that Degrees of Love is a debut novel by Lisa Slabach. This is one of the best novels I have read this year."
- Rabia Tanveer, Readers' Favorite

Spotlight - A Fistful of Frost by Rebecca Chastain

Blurb

Madison’s job—and soul—are on thin ice.

Madison Fox is determined to reform Jamie, her half-evil pooka, but the bond linking her to Jamie works both ways. Already, it has manipulated her into bending the rules. If she continues down this path, she could doom her soul. Since her judgment can’t be trusted, a high-ranking inspector now dictates Madison’s every interaction with Jamie, and each directive drives them further apart.

Unfortunately, Madison has bigger issues than the potential degradation of her soul. Winter has struck with a vengeance. Frost moths plague the entire state, reinforcing the artificially frigid temperature. Worse, cold-blooded, soul-stealing enemies are flocking into her region from the north—creatures Madison has little defense against.

With the inspector scrutinizing her every misstep, Madison is in for the battle of her life. If she hopes to survive, she must make an impossible choice: save herself and her region or save Jamie.

An imaginative urban fantasy filled with heart, humor, and plenty of butt-kicking action—A Fistful of Frost is a book you won’t want to miss!

Excerpt :
I expected the inspector to look like an Army Ranger, tall, muscular, and radiating an “I could kill you if I wanted to” vibe. The woman who stepped from the car shattered my assumptions. Midfifties, petite, and pale, with a slash of bright auburn in her chin-length white-blond hair, Inspector Pamela Hennessey didn’t look authoritative until her assessing gaze landed on me. Then I fought not to squirm.

“Madison Fox and the pooka Jamie,” she said, not quite a greeting and not a question. It would have sounded rude if not delivered in her posh British accent. “I’ve heard a lot about you.”

“All good, I hope,” I quipped.

She eyed me up and down, giving me a noncommittal, “Mmm.”

My smile froze at the corners.

Rose climbed from the driver’s seat and shut the car door with more force than necessary. The Latina empath gave me a curt nod, as if we were strangers and not coworkers and friends. What the hell? I stopped pretending to smile. Jamie shifted closer, brushing his gloved hand against mine, worry crinkling his eyebrows as he read the tension of the group. I gave him a shoulder bump to reassure him, pretending to be relaxed. Pamela’s gaze snapped from our touching hands to our shoulders to our faces, and I fought the urge to leap away from Jamie as if I were doing something wrong.

“Give me a net and let’s get your purity test out of the way, Madison,” the inspector said.

“Pardon me?” Wasn’t a purity test a medieval way to judge a woman’s virginity? Not only had that ship long since sailed, but I also didn’t see how it would be relevant—or anyone’s business. I checked Brad’s neutral expression. Did details about my sex life fall under the impress her or don’t embarrass me category?

The inspector rounded on Brad, wispy-fine hair flaring on either side of her pink headband earmuffs. “She doesn’t know what a purity test is? You haven’t tested her once in the last five days?”

“Madison’s purity has never been in question.”

A warning frizzled down my spine at Brad’s bland tone. She’d put him on the defense. I glanced to Rose for a clue, but she only grimaced and looked away.

“Don’t let your recent victories make you arrogant, Brad,” Pamela said. “Of course her purity is in question. She’s bonded to a pooka.”

Aha! This wasn’t about virginity; this was about Jamie’s dual nature and the metaphysical bond he’d placed on me. I’d been warned—repeatedly—to be careful of Jamie’s darker half; more than one bonded enforcer had been corrupted by a pooka’s morally ambiguous influence. No one had mentioned purity tests.

“This is to see if Jamie has . . . changed me?” I asked, choosing my words carefully in deference to Jamie. Nothing in his expression said he took offense to the insinuation that our link might have tainted me. He saw nothing wrong with wielding atrum as readily as lux lucis, and if I failed a purity test, it’d probably make him happy.

“Changed you?” Pamela echoed. “No. I need to know if the pooka’s bond has sullied you.”

So much for being tactful. I peeked sideways at Jamie, but he hadn’t reacted, his gaze focused beyond Pamela on the people walking by.

“Is there a problem?” the inspector asked.

“No. Of course not, but, Inspector Hennessey—” I shot Brad a desperate look.

“Call me Pamela. Never Pam.”

“Got it. Um, Pamela—”

“She doesn’t know how to make a net,” Brad said for me.

“Why not?” Pamela demanded, spinning to confront my boss again, the hem of her wool coat flaring to reveal the calves of her pale leather boots.

“I haven’t had the luxury of instituting a methodical training regimen with Madison.”

“Mmm,” Pamela said.

I was starting to hate that noise.

“And if she encountered a frost moth?” she asked.

“She has a lighter.”

One I’d purchased this afternoon at Brad’s insistence. Shaped like a small blowtorch, with a trigger to ignite the flame, it was the fanciest lighter I’d ever owned. It also had the distinction of being the only lighter I’d ever purchased with the intention of using as a weapon—or at least I thought that was the plan. I pressed my lips together. Now wouldn’t be a good time to confess that after reading Val’s entry on sjel tyver, I’d completely forgotten to ask the handbook about frost moths—what they looked like, where to find them, or how to kill them.

“I can instruct Madison on nets now,” Brad offered.

The inspector shook her head. “Let’s get the inquisition out of the way.”

Title : The Earth Bleeds Red
Author : Jackson Paul Baer
Genres : Mystery, Thriller, Suspense
Source : Kindle Unlimited

Blurb :

Scott Miller has everything he’s ever hoped for. He has a successful marriage to Jessie, a stunningly beautiful, creative woman. His seventeen-year-old daughter, Ashley, is both gorgeous and intelligent, and has just been accepted to the University of Notre Dame, where Scott received his PhD. He has a comforting home in the woods, and a fulfilling career as a college professor at Oregon State University in Corvallis. He’s blissful, and at peace, until it all comes shattering down.

Ashley is kidnapped. The scene of the abduction is horrific and bloody, and the police are convinced she couldn’t have survived. They accuse her boyfriend, Brandon, of Ashley’s murder. He declares his innocence, and claims that a masked man who entered his house and overwhelmed them both took Ashley. No one believes Brandon.

Then the bodies of three other missing girls are discovered, all bearing the mark of a known serial killer the FBI has been hunting for years. Evidence mounts. As Special Agent James Duncan tracks the Hail Mary Killer, Scott and Jessie try to move on with their lives. But they can’t shake the feeling that Ashley may still be alive, and that the time for saving their only daughter is quickly running out.

In the best tradition of literature and suspense, Jackson Paul Baer has weaved a heartfelt tale of one family’s struggle to survive after a despicable evil wrenches them apart.

My Musings :

I borrowed the book on Kindle Unlimited and read it from May 1 to May 2, 2018

This book was brought to my attention by the author from his review request. As soon as I saw the book cover, I thought it was maybe a fantasy read and I was hesitant to accept the request since I was looking for different genres from romance and fantasy at that time. But when I read the blurb and realised it was a thriller, I was hooked on the plot with the words "missing girls". There are few words which make me decide if I want to read a book or not. And any missing persons mentioned in the summary is enough to get me interested because I love mysteries!

The starting of the book is slow. I was expecting Ashley's kidnapping to be the starting point of the book. But I was mistaken. The first quarter of the book is spent on laying out the premise of the story. The family dynamics between Ashley and her parents are established right at the beginning. They get along very well unlike most other families. Ashley seems to treat her parents like her friends and her life is an open book for them. Ashley doesn't show the typical teenage behaviour which I found a bit odd. No one was that perfect or agreeable according to me.

When Ashley goes missing, Scottie and Jessie are shattered. They can't understand what was happening since their daughter didn't have any secrets. And from this part onwards, the pace of the story changed from sluggish to a turn the pages in a hurry quickness. I was so invested in the personal lives of Ashley and her family that I was glued to the book at all times and finished the book in a few hours.

The author has this way of getting me entangled in the emotions of the characters, be it Ashley or her parents. I seriously felt so bad for Jessie and Scottie during the hard times they face with Ashley's disappearance. They don't get any closure since her body isn't found and they go through the motions of life instead of living. The writing evoked strong feelings in me and had me breathing through the same scenes as the characters.

The Christian faith is highlighted all through the book especially with the parents' suffering and how they find themselves in prayer. I understood Scottie's struggle with his faith. Any person would find it difficult in his place. This brought freshness to the book.

There are few other points which felt unique to the book. The book is in the father's POV and so I was pleasantly surprised since I was expecting it to be the usual thriller type with the focus on the solving of the crime and getting the killer. But the story diverted from the norm and focused on the parents' lives through the kidnapping. Another point was how the killer's identity was introduced without any fanfare and didn't have me guessing it. What I did wonder while reading was how he got Ashley in his snare and what he did with her, which was explained towards the end.

This shows that there are always secrets in people's lives inspite of knowing them really well. And Ashley's naivety is what caused all the trouble. Speaking of the killer, though I empathise with his past, he absolutely deserves my anger with his actions. And no I am not going to talk more about him or the situation because I don't want to out the story. There are a few surprising turns at the end for you. So read the story to know more!

Speaking of the end, I was slightly dazed with the way the author's mind worked with the fate of the characters. It was unexpected but kept well with the genre of the read. And there were few parts where I felt the author had glossed over the details which didn't go with the story for me.

Overall, I enjoyed the story and I hope if you want to read a thriller with a different POV, this book's for you.

My one line review : A gripping thriller from the victim's parents' POV with surprising twists at the end.

My rating : 4/5

My reread factor : 3/5
